2013 was a great year for superhero movies. Zach Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ reintroduced Superman in fine fashion, while Marvel’s two offerings – ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘Iron Man 3’ – were two of the highest rated superhero movies of the year. Hugh Jackman’s fifth outing as mutant Wolverine in ‘The Wolverine’ was also well received, as was ‘Kick Ass 2’, the second film in the Kick Ass trilogy. 2014 and 2015 are already shaping up to be great years for superhero movies with a bevy of fantastic movies due for release. This article will the top 10 most anticipated superhero movies of 2014 and 2015.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – March 2014
2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ was an unexpected surprise. Directed by Joe Johnston, the film starred actor Chris Evans as Captain America, a super soldier created to help the US army fight the nazis. The trailers painted the film as a cheesy, run of the mill superhero origin film, but the finished film turned out to be a polished, well put together movie with great performances, particularly from Evans who excelled in his role. 2014’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ will see Evans donning the Captain’s suit once again, this time to fight the ‘Winter Soldier’, a powerful foe with a hidden past. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is looking like a fun superhero film with lots of great action. Make sure to catch it when it hits cinema screens in March, 2014.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – April 2014
Sam Raimi’s Spiderman Trilogy is generally considered to be one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time. Starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, the trilogy followed ‘Peter Parker’, a nerdy science geek, as he learned to harness his newfound spider-influenced superhero powers to protect New York from evil. 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ saw the Spider-Man film franchise getting a reboot. Director Marc Webb replaced Sam Raimi in the director’s chair, while Andrew Garfield, fresh off his success in ‘The Social Network’, replaced Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. The Amazing Spider-Man had it all: great action, a great script, and fantastic performances from Garfield and co-star Emma Stone. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ is looking to pick up where the first film left off. The film will follow Parker as he learns more about his parent’s death while doing battle with his most iconic foe, the Green Goblin. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due for release in April 2014 – don’t miss it.
X-Men: Days of Future Past – May 2014
Director Bryan Singer sparked a superhero movie revolution when he released the first X-Men movie in 2000. The film was well written, well directed, and expertly put together with great performances from its cast. While Singer came back to direct X-Men’s sequel, X2, his presence was sorely missed on the third film in the trilogy. While replacement director Brett Ratner did an admirable job with the film, his skills were lacking compared to Singer’s. 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ will see Singer returning to the X-Men franchise for the first time in 11 years. Based on the hit graphic novel of the same film, the film will see three generations of X-Men coming together across time to prevent the demise of all mutants. With a stellar cast, including a number of Oscar winners, a great director at the helm, and a stellar script from writer Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Days of Future Past is looking like the best X-Men film yet. Hopefully it won’t disappoint when it hits cinema screens in May, 2014.
Guardians of the Galaxy – August 2014
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is arguably the riskiest Marvel Comics movie yet. While previous Marvel films Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers were based on well known comic book series, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy will focus on the adventures of the lesser known Guardians of the Galaxy team, a group of five intergalactic outlaws trying to rid the universe of evil. Judging by the recent trailers, writer and director James Gunn seems to have captured the tone of the source material perfectly: the film appears to have tons of action and comedy, and it doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously. With a great cast and a well respected writer and director at the helm, Guardians of the Galaxy will be a must see when it hits cinema screens in August, 2014.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – October 2014
1990’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ was a phenomenon. Based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book and cartoon series, the film followed a group of four mutated turtles – Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo – as they did battle with the evil Shredder and the foot gang. With a great script, endearing performances, and fun action sequences, the film captured the hearts of minds of audiences everywhere around the world. 2014’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ is looking to recapture the magic of the 90s film. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, the film will see the eponymous foursome teaming up with intrepid April O’Neill, played by Megan Fox, to, once again, do battle with the Shredder. Due for release in October, 2014, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a must see for any and all fans of the Turtles.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – August 2014
Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City’ series is one of the most popular comic book series of all time. Since 1991, the series has told the stories of the characters that live in Basin City, a fictional town located in the Western United States. 2005’s ‘Sin City’ saw director Robert Rodriguez successfully translating Miller’s series to film. The film, which starred actors Mickey Rourke, Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, and more, was expertly put together with great direction and a fantastic script. 2014’s ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ will see Rodriguez once again returning to Sin City to tell more stories of debauchery and crime. The film will, once again, feature an all star cast, with Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Ray Liota, and Jeremy Piven being but a handful of the names starring in the film. With an excellent cast and a visionary director at the helm, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is looking like one of the best comic book movies of 2014. Make sure to catch it when it hits cinemas worldwide in August, 2014.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 2015
2012’s ‘The Avengers’ was one of the biggest and most successful movies of all time. Directed by cult director Josh Whedon, the film saw Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury teaming up on screen for the first time to vanquish Loki and an evil invading alien race called the Chitauri. The film was a huge success with critics and audiences alike; the film went on to earn a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes while grossing an incredible $1,518,594,910 on the worldwide box office. 2014’s ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will see Earth’s mightiest heroes teaming up once again to fight a powerful foe, this time the evil robot Ultron. With returning director Joss Whedon at the helm, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is likely to be the biggest superhero movie of 2015. Make sure to catch it when it hits cinema screens worldwide in May, 2015.
The Fantastic Four – June 2015
The Fantastic Four film franchise has been mistreated over the years. While the foursome have made many film appearances over the years, all have disappointed with poor acting, poor direction, and troublesome scripts. 2015’s ‘The Fantastic Four’ is looking to turn things around for the franchise. Helmed by director Josh Trank, director of the well received superhero movie ‘Chronicle’, the reboot will follow the Fantastic Four as they learn to control their powers and use them to vanquish evil. While little is known about The Fantastic Four at the moment, the film is already one of the most anticipated films of 2015. Hopefully director Trank will make a film worthy of the Fantastic Four name. Make sure to catch it when it releases worldwide in June, 2015.
Ant-Man – July 2015
Ant-Man is one of the lesser known super heroes in the Marvel Universe. While the character has built himself a cult following over the years, he is strictly a B-Tier character, which is why Marvel’s choice to release an Ant-Man film is an interesting one. So far, Marvel has been doing everything right with the Ant-Man movie. Director Edgar Wright is an inspired choice and writer Joe Cornish is known to be a big fan of the character. Actor Paul Rudd is also the perfect choice for the Ant-Man role. Ant-Man is currently pencilled in for a July, 2015 release. Make sure to see it when it hits cinema screens then.
Batman vs Superman – 2016?
Batman and Superman are two of the biggest names in the comic book world. While many have dreamed of seeing the two doing battle with each other on the big screen, nobody thought it would ever happen. Fortunately, 2015’s ‘Batman vs Superman’ will see the pair taking each other on on the silver screen for the very first time. Directed by ‘Man of Steel’ director Zach Snyder, Batman vs Superman will see Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill returning to play Superman while actor Ben Affleck plays Batman. The film will see the two teaming up to defeat the evil Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg. Batman vs Superman will likely be one of the biggest superhero movies of 2015. Keep an eye out for it when its hits cinemas in July, 2015.
