Katie Melua was born on September 16, 1984 in Kutaisi, Georgia. She moved with her family to Northern Ireland at the age of eight, and to England at the age of 14. She participated in a talent competition on a British television and won. She began studying music at the prestigious art school BRIT School, where Melua, who attracted the attention of songwriter Mike Batt, made his first step in her music career in 2003 after signing a contract with Dramatico’s record label.
In November 2003, at the age of 19, her first album, Call off the Search, was released and sold more than 1.8 million copies in the UK. Her second album, Piece by Piece, was released in September 2005. In 2005, she was the best-selling female singer in the UK.
