Forget about college age bimbos and barely legal starlets – nothing gets a movie sexual fantasy going like a milf. Representing the ultimate ‘forbidden fruit’, these older seductresses could be the mother of a best friend (or even worse – girlfriend), a hot soccer mom or a refined socialite with a very powerful but inattentive husband. But underneath that dignified maturity is a sex-crazed animal just waiting to get out. Well, that’s the fantasy at least. Whether they act like cougars stalking their younger prey or are much more cool and aloof in their seduction, these refined sexy matriarchs have been a source of infatuation for both their younger onscreen counterparts and for countless movie fans.
10. Stacy Edwards – Superbad (2007)
Evan’s Mom (Stacy Edwards) in Superbad is the stereotypical movie milf. Appearing in one all-too brief scene, she bends over and sees off best pals Evan and Seth (Michael Cera and Jonah Hill) as they drive off to school for the day. Like all good male friends, Seth just can’t resist commenting on his best friend’s mother’s downblouse action by remarking “I am truly jealous you got to suck on those tits when you were a baby”.
9. Halle Berry – Monster’s Ball (2001)
OK, we’ll admit that the subject matter of Monster’s Ball is a tad inappropriate for the discussion of movie milfs, but Halle Berry has never looked sexier or nakeder than in this bleak drama. Berry’s character has a pretty depressing affair with a prison guard played by Billy Bob Thornton after her husband is executed and her son is killed in a freak accident. If you can get over the sight of Billy Bob’s bare ass and ignore the context of the scene, the steamy couch sex they have blows Berry’s brief topless scene from Swordfish out of the water.
8. Verna Bloom – Animal House (1978)
Faced by expulsion by their college dean Vernon Wormer, notorious frathouse Delta Tau Chi throw a toga party to pick themselves up. As the frat boys shop for supplies at the supermarket, womaniser Otter tries his luck chatting up an older woman with a sensuous, innuendo-filled conversation about vegetables. He’s stopped in his tracks when she says that she’s the dean’s wife but luckily for him she’s not exactly thrilled about her husband either. The bored housewife turns up at their toga party and quickly makes her way to Otter’s bedroom so he can sample the ultimate forbidden fruit.
7. Beverly D’angelo – National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
As the wife of hijinx-prone Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), Ellen (Beverly D’angelo) certainly puts up with a lot in the National Lampoon Vacation movies – including having her sex tapes stolen and used in a porno advert and putting up with her husband’s constant leching over other women. Although she may be less provocative than others on this list (save for a nude shower scene in the first movie), underneath that long-suffering housewife facade is a very underrated movie milf.
6. Marisa Tomei in Cyrus (2010) & The Wrestler (2008)
Cyrus puts a unique spin on the lustful mother cliche. In the indie drama Marisa Tomei isn’t the object of affection for one of her son’s friends but rather to John C. Reilly’s divorcee character. However, the problem is that she seems to share a very weird and intimate relationship with her 21 year old son Cyrus (played with creepy relish by Jonah Hill). This unhealthy maternal bond puts a strain on Reilly as he tries to put the moves on Cyrus’ mom. Although most men would probably run for the hills when faced with such an Oedipal-inspired dilemma, we can’t really blame Reilly for doggedly pursuing someone who looks like Tomei. For a less disturbing milf turn from Tomei, she plays a stripper in the Wrestler who works the pole and reveals all to pay the bills for her and her young son.
5. Angelina Jolie in Beowulf (2007)
Admittedly, a fantasy tale based on classic Anglo-Saxon literature brought to life by CGI may seem like unlikely inspiration for milfs in the movies, but when it’s Angelina Jolie providing the motion capture for the mother in question it starts to make a little more sense. Jolie plays the mythical Grendel’s Mother who seduces Beowulf into siring another offspring after the warrior kills her firstborn, and her likeness is captured pretty well without venturing too far into the uncanny valley problem which spoils so many CGI creations. Slithering across the screen completely naked glistening in gold and speaking in a sultry exotic accent, we can’t really blame Beowulf for falling into her honey trap and for overlooking the fact that she is an evil succubus with a 10 ft reptilian tale.
4. Lea Thompson – Back to the Future (1985)
Speaking of inappropriate milfs, it’s hard not to feel sympathy for teenage time traveller Marty McFly. Travelling back 30 years to 1955 and running into his own mother, Marty barely manages to hide his conflicted feelings when he discovers that good old mom is much younger and much hotter than he could have even had imagined. He’s even more confused to learn that she was something of a sex-crazed maniac back in the day and wants nothing more than to jump his bones. Lea Thompson perfectly balances wide-eyed, butter wouldn’t melt innocence with a crazy, sex-eyed nymphomaniac streak that no child wants to know their own parents are capable of. Technically, she is more of a ‘milf to be’ but to Marty this horny teenager is still his mother and he’s faced with the uneasy task of hooking her up with his loser father or he’ll cease to exist forever.
3. Jane Seymour – Wedding Crashers (2005)
While some movie milfs play down their sexual prowess and are more than happy to let their young admirers trip over themselves as they desperately try to win their attention, Kathleen “Kitty Kat” Cleary (Jane Seymour) from Wedding Crashers is much more blatant in her efforts. Confronting Owen Wilson’s character John alone in his bedroom, she quickly disrobes and asks for his opinion on her new boob job. Although John is infatuated with her daughter, he gives them a cursory feel because she refuses to let him go without at least touching them. Unfortunately, his efforts at discretion and disinterest are quickly undermined when best friend Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) persistently asks whether he got to motorboat them and if they’re “built for speed or comfort”.
2 Jennifer Coolidge – American Pie (1999)
American Pie resuscitated the sex comedy genre and reminded us all that there’s nothing funnier than horny teens desperate to pop their cherry. The first movie is remembered for many things – pie fucking, band camp anecdotes, ridiculously hot foreign exchange students – but it was Stifler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) who changed pop culture forever. American Pie is widely credited with popularising the acronym thanks to John Cho’s enthusiastic background character who explains the term and starts chanting “MILF! MILF!” at a picture of Stifler’s Mom on the wall. Sadly for Stifler, she’s the fantasy of desire for most of his classmates and his pompous, nerdy friend Finch is determined to lose his virginity to her. It’s easy to see why this busty blonde brought the idea of milfs to the masses.
1 Anne Bancroft – The Graduate (1967)
Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate is the original movie milf. Played by Anne Bancroft, the character’s name was associated with sexy older women who had an eye for toy boys long before anyone had ever heard of a milf. Trapped in a loveless marriage, Robinson pounces on aimless college graduate Benjamin (played by Dustin Hoffman) and the two set up regular meetings for some dirty, no strings attached hotel sex. However, like so many meaningless sexual trysts their relationship gets complicated when her young toy boy lover falls in love with her daughter and pursues her instead. For many Mrs. Robinson is still the ultimate milf fantasy – a sexy, dignified older woman with an air of mysteriousness who turns younger, inexperienced boys into men.
