The Nazca Lines are one of the most intriguing archaeological mysteries in the world: enormous figures and lines etched into the arid soil of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. 1. Created by the Nazca Culture
The lines were created by the Nazca people, a pre-Inca culture that flourished in the area between approximately 100 BC and 800 AD. This culture is also known for its complex irrigation systems and sophisticated, colorful pottery.
The Nazca created the geoglyphs by removing the dark, reddish-brown top layer of iron-oxide-coated pebbles, revealing the lighter, sandy subsoil beneath. The lines are typically only 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 inches) deep.

3. Only Visible from the Air?
One of the most striking features of the Nazca Lines is that the figures and complex patterns are only fully recognizable from the air. This has led to much speculation about how and why they were made.
Although the Nazca did not have aircraft, it is possible they designed the figures on a small scale and then laid them out on a large scale using grids and stakes. Furthermore, the lines and some figures are indeed visible from the surrounding hills and foothills of the Andes.
4. Theories About Purpose: Rituals and Water
The exact purpose of the Nazca Lines is still debated among archaeologists. The most common theories suggest a religious or ceremonial purpose.
- Ritual Pathways: The straight lines and open spaces might have been ceremonial paths where processions took place.
- Water Cult: Many lines point towards water sources in the Andean foothills. Given the extremely arid climate, water was vital. The lines and figures (like the spider and monkey, associated with rain) could have been part of rituals to implore the gods for water and fertility.
- Astronomical Calendar?: The theory that the lines form a giant astronomical calendar (proposed by Maria Reiche) is now considered less likely, although some lines do seem to correspond with solstices or certain stars.
5. Maria Reiche: The ‘Lady of the Lines’
German-Peruvian mathematician and archaeologist Maria Reiche (1903-1998) dedicated over 50 years of her life to the study, preservation, and protection of the Nazca Lines. She was one of the first to systematically map, measure, and interpret the lines (initially as an astronomical calendar).
Thanks to her tireless efforts, often under harsh desert conditions, the lines gained international recognition and better protection. She is affectionately known as the ‘Lady of the Lines’.
6. How Have They Been Preserved?
The exceptional preservation of the Nazca Lines for over a thousand years is due to the extremely dry, windless, and stable climate of the Nazca Desert. There is hardly any rain, and wind is minimal.
The top layer of dark stones protects the underlying soil from erosion and absorbs solar heat, creating a protective layer of air. This has allowed the shallow lines to remain remarkably well-preserved.
7. Threats: Climate and Human Activity
Despite the stable climate, the Nazca Lines are threatened today. Climate change is leading to unusual weather patterns, such as heavy rainfall (El Niño), which can cause erosion.
However, the greatest threat comes from human activity. Squatter settlements, agriculture, mining, and damage from vehicles (like the damage caused by Greenpeace activists in 2014 and a truck driver in 2018) pose a serious risk to the preservation of these fragile geoglyphs.
8. UNESCO World Heritage Site
Due to their unique character and cultural significance, the Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
This has led to increased international attention and efforts for protection and research, although managing such a vast and fragile area remains a huge challenge.
9. Not Extraterrestrial Creations
The enormous scale and precision of the lines, and the fact that they are best seen from the air, have led to popular (pseudo-)scientific theories that they were created by or for extraterrestrial visitors (as popularized by Erich von Däniken).
However, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever for these claims. Archaeologists agree that the lines fall entirely within the technological and cultural capabilities of the Nazca people.
10. New Discoveries Thanks to Technology
Thanks to modern technologies like drones and satellite imagery, new, smaller, or less distinct geoglyphs are still being discovered in the Nazca region and surrounding valleys (like Palpa).
These new discoveries, often on hillsides and more visible from the ground, help archaeologists gain a more complete picture of the extent, diversity, and possible meaning of this fascinating pre-Inca tradition.
